STAFF SHORTAGES IN NY & NJ NURSING HOMES
High-risk patients cannot receive the proper care they need due to a huge decrease in nurse-staffing levels. On a single day in April, 127 nursing homes reported a drop in 25% of nursing staff between New York and New Jersey. Another report showed over 300 nursing homes had at least one day with 40% less staff for the comparable day last year.
The surges in staff shortage is a result of COVID-19 in recent months. Nursing homes specifically were hit badly due to quarantine requirements and the potential for exposing such a large volume of high-risk individuals. David Grabowski, a professor at Harvard Medical School studied nursing homes during the pandemic and emphasized the importance of sufficient staffing.
